Constant Metamorphosis

2021

This is an original work hand carved on linoleum block and hand printed, created as cover art for the October 2021 issue of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker Catholic Agitator newspaper.

Life is a constant metamorphosis cycle and we grow the most when we allow change to happen without fighting it, despite the inevitable growing pains. As we reflect on what 2020 & 2021 have been, we have been in sort of a chrysalis, waiting in the darkness. But as we’ve been waiting, we’ve also been changing and transforming. We’ve been recognizing our patterns and habits, both as individuals and as a society, and it’s time for us to grow out of these old ways and leave them behind - white supremacy culture, violence, racism, capitalism, individualism, industrialism and war, to name a few. We instead lean into the God of Change, and learn to shape together. As the new world flutters out, we create space for those who are shaping and changing it - the dreamers, the artists, the poets, the musicians, the organizers, the teachers, the youth, the culture weavers - and we learn to care for and nourish each other. We reach for something more, “to root among the stars” as Octavia Butler says.
