Dismantle the System

6”x6”

2021

This is an original work hand carved on linoleum block and hand printed created for the June 2021 Los Angeles Catholic Worker Agitator newspaper.

“Our problems stem from our acceptance of this filthy, rotten system.”

- Dorothy Day

This piece was created to demonstrate the dismantling, both from within and from the outside, of the systems of oppression that exist - in us and around us. We are working to destroy these systems while we are still chained to them and living within them ourselves. As Catholic Workers say, “We are building a new world in the shell of the old.” We work to disrupt and rebuild from the outside - to abolish the police and the prison industrial complex. But also we need to work from within the system, shown by the flowers breaking through the wall, and celebrating victories such as Derek Chauvin’s guilty convictions, with the strong awareness that this is still not justice, it is accountability. The ultimate goal is abolition - that no oppressive system continues to exist and that we should instead invest into making sure that all people have their basic needs met and can thrive.
