Hippie Garden

5”x5”

2019

Hand carved on linoleum block and hand printed original print inspired by the Hippie Kitchen Garden of the Los Angeles Catholic Worker.

This design is meant to capture the fullness and warmth of community at the LACW that I experienced most tangibly among the relationships I built surrounded by birds and flowers at the Hippie Kitchen & Garden, where we served beans, salad, and bread 3 times a week and offered services like foot care to unhoused folks living on Skid Row. The intentional love, care, and hospitality put into the work at the Hippie Kitchen, and the garden design with tables for people to eat, sleep, or watch the birds, are key to the LACW's mission, desiring to offer folks some peace despite the harsh reality of living on the street downtown. My experience opened me up to friendships with folks from all walks of life and stretched my understanding of what community really means.
