Resurrection through Resistance

4”x6”

2024

This is an original work hand carved on linoleum block and hand printed created for the June 2024 Los Angeles Catholic Worker Agitator newspaper.

Part of a 3 part series of works, including “Manifesting the Dreams of Our Ancestors” and “Lineage of Love and Liberation.”

In this issue the LACW reflects a bit on it’s beginnings, as well as the value of ancestral wisdom, movement roots that’s inform us, values and traditions passed down, familial and institutional lineages, etc. It is also an invitation to join an action at Vandenberg Air Force Base that has been part of the annual history and legacy of the LACW to commemorate the 79th anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, to advocate for nuclear abolition, and to witness against the violence in Gaza and Ukraine.

I was thinking about how our ancestors may have sat around chatting while they worked in their craft, dreaming of future generations. And I think about ancestors in movement work, the leaders, activists, and organizers working for a better society. Although there is still so much pain in the world, there is also, I think, so many opportunities and advancements beyond what they could have even imagined. We continue in their footsteps, in their legacies, to continue resisting and resurrecting and liberating so that we continue building, even beyond our own wildest dreams, something better.
